How to use it
- Fill in your child, the school, the person picking up and the date. Leave the time as “dismissal” unless it’s an early pickup.
- Print it, sign it, and send it in the bag, email it to the office, or send it through the school’s own app.
- Tell the person picking up to bring photo ID. Many US schools won’t release a child without it, and BC schools will check who they are.
A letter can’t override a custody order. If an order or parenting agreement limits who may pick up, the school follows that, so give them a copy ahead of time. This is a template, not legal advice.
Questions parents ask
How do I write a letter to let someone pick up my child from school?
Write to the school office with your child’s full name and class, the date and time, the full name of the person picking up, the reason, where your child will be, and your phone number, then sign and date it. Tell them to bring photo ID. This tool writes the letter for you to print.
Does a pickup authorization letter need to be signed?
Many schools ask for a signed and dated note, and a phone call alone isn’t always enough. Print it, sign it in ink, and keep a copy.
Can someone who isn’t on the emergency list pick up my child with a letter?
Some schools allow it with written permission; others only release children to adults already on the pickup list. Call the office to check, and add regular helpers to the list at the start of the year.
Is anything I type here saved?
No. The letter is written and printed by your browser. Nothing is sent to Kid Pickup or stored anywhere.
A sheet can’t tell you nobody has Thursday.
Kid Pickup gives every pickup one person who said “I’ll do it”, and sends a nudge when one still has nobody. Your sitter and grandparents never pay.
